Golden ‘Europa’ Tumbler Character by Ottmar Hörl
‘Europe is graceful, feminine and self-assured.’
What makes this golden figure so appealing? When approaching the installation at the Europa-Park Resort, Berlin gallery owner and art expert Gerrit Friese said:
“Through this depiction of Europe, Ottmar Hörl has provided the world with a beautiful new artistic interpretation. He has transformed the myth of Europe, which previously centred on the bull, by making the woman the new symbol. She embodies harmony, prudent activity and togetherness. Our Europe is immediately recognisable in her elegant form.”
The Artwork
These Europe themed sculptures were created in 2021 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Europa-Park founder Franz Mack. His son Roland Mack, the owner of Europa-Park, said: “At Europa-Park, Europe comes alive in a playful way every day. People from different cultures meet here without reservation. That's what our park stands for.”

Character Europa (a figure from Greek mythology and the continent's namesake)

The Artist
As a staunch European, conceptual artist Hörl cares deeply about the continent's self-image. He sees his creative work as a mission for everyone:
“I assume that visitors recognise the instability of the European Community. In fact, the figure embodies everything: it's like a roly-poly toy. Get up, Europe! We must not be discouraged when things falter or tip over. Just as we must constantly work on democracy.”

Ottmar Hörl has been one of Europe's best-known conceptual artists for decades. He gained public recognition through his diverse sculptures on themes of everyday life and large-scale projects featuring serial figures in public spaces, these include Beethoven, Goethe, Daimler and Hölderlin, as well as his popular dwarves, Spontis, guardian angels and Dürer hares.
