Franz Mack, together with his son Roland, is the founder of Europa-Park, which opened its doors in Rust on 12th July 1975. During the many business trips abroad, while in the USA, he and Roland Mack came up with the idea of building a theme park. Many facilities and rides that attract visitors from all over the world are new concepts that are still developed at the Waldkirch parent plant. Europa-Park is now the largest seasonal theme park in the world and the undisputed market leader in Germany. The Mack Group currently employs over 5,000 people. Thanks to his passion for technology, numerous rides in the park bear Franz Mack's signature. Among other things, he designed the ‘Eurosat’ rollercoaster, which opened in 1989, as well as the ‘Euro-Mir’ high-speed rollercoaster that went into operation in 1997. He designed and developed the model himself at a very old age. In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Franz Mack was involved in a large number of honorary positions, such as being on the supervisory board of Volksbank Waldkirch, in the standards committee for temporary buildings of the TÜV and as an arbitrator in the Association of German Leisure Entrepreneurs.

HONORARY CITIZEN OF RUST Franz Mack was a sponsor of numerous clubs and associations in the communities of Rust and Waldkirch. He was granted high honours by the Federal President: in 1984 he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1997 the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class. For exemplary and outstanding services to the common good, Franz Mack was made an honorary citizen of Rust by the community of Rust in 2001. He is also the holder of the Medal of Merit in Gold from the city of Waldkirch. Franz Mack had been married to Liesel Mack (née Börschig) since 1948, who passed away in 2004. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren. The generational change in the company was very important to Franz Mack from an early stage: Today, his sons, Roland and Jürgen, together with his grandchildren Michael, Thomas and Ann-Kathrin, manage the Mack group, which includes Europa-Park and Mack Rides in Waldkirch. Europa-Park boss Roland Mack: “Our father was a great role model for all of us right into the last days of his life. He showed the characteristics of modesty, hard work, perseverance, honesty, emotions and openness in every aspect of his life and thus had a lasting impact on our family and our company.” Franz Mack was always an important advisor to the family. His advice to his sons and grandchildren: "Always stay humble and keep at it".
